What this is

Rincalca Land is an English-language reference to Japanese internet slang, online culture, and the small, strange industries that sit underneath them — vending machines, pachinko parlours, convenience store chains, forum jargon that has been mutating since the early 2000s.

Most of this material exists in Japanese and almost none of it exists in English. That gap is the reason the site exists.

How to read it

The entries are written straight-faced, and they are not always telling the truth.

The three dictionaries — the glossary, the industry dictionary, and the internet history dictionary — are written in the register of a serious reference work applied to subjects that do not deserve it. Ordinary business facts are narrated as though they were the rise and fall of empires. Some of the exaggeration is obvious. Some of it is not.

This is the joke. It is also a warning: do not cite this site as a factual source. If you need to know something for real, the entries name their subjects clearly enough that you can go and look them up somewhere accountable.

Where an entry describes a real company, a real product, or a real event, the underlying facts are drawn from published sources. What is invented is the tone, the emphasis, and the occasional straight-faced flourish — never a real person’s words, motives, or private life. The mockery is aimed at industries and phenomena, not at individuals.

Entries are written from published material and rewritten rather than reproduced, and they are checked before publication — but checking is not the same as verification. Errors will exist, and given the register described above, an error and a joke can be hard to tell apart. That is the third reason not to treat any of this as reference material.

If an entry is wrong in a way that matters — a real company misrepresented, a real person implicated, a factual claim that reads as fact and is simply false — please say so and it will be corrected or removed.
